DAY 1

After enjoying your breakfast it’s time to drive to the Gisenyi province. You can choose to engage in a Kigali city tour – one of Africa’s most developed and cleanest cities. You will visit the Gisozi genocide memorial site, national museum, and some craft shops and local markets for souvenirs. In the afternoon you have lunch and proceed the drive to Gisenyi. Here you can go for a relaxing evening boat ride over Lake Kivu.

DAY 2

Today we’re crossing the border in Congo to end up in the Kibatsi village. In this village we will start our hike to the Nyirangogo, an active volcanic mountain that occasionally erupts. We walk during the day towards the top such that we reach it in the evening. At this beautiful point you can have breathtaking views of the 8 virunga volcanoes, over Uganda and Rwanda.

DAY 3

Today we rise early to hike back to the Kibatsi village. After a full day of hiking we will arrive your hotel in the evening, where you can either relax or head out for an optional cultural walk towards the Iby’wacu cultural village.

DAY 4

Today, is your mountain gorilla tracking day! After breakfast you’re heading to the Kinigi Park headquarters, where you will get a briefing about the do’s and don’ts of gorilla tracking. Together with your group, tracking gear, packed lunch and porter for the backpack, you move into the bamboo forests to search for the endangered creatures. This search may last from 30 minutes to several hours depending on how deep your gorilla family has moved in to the forest in search of water and food. Once you find the gorillas, you enjoy an hour interacting with them; as they eat, play and tease each other. After taking as many videos and photos as possible you return to your starting point. In the afternoon, you have to option to head out for a visit to the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo.

DAY 5

Today we return to Kinigi Park to hike to both Dian Fossey’s Tomb as Karisimbi’s research center. Dian Fossey is an American scientific researcher who dedicated her life to saving and conserving the lives of the world’s most endangered species of wildlife – the mountain gorillas. During this hike you’re able to spot other wildlife species like elephants, golden monkeys and colorful butterflies in large numbers.

After the hike you’ll have lunch and get ready for a stride to the Iby’wacu cultural center where you will be entertained by the local natives of Rwanda in their traditional dance and drama.
