10 DAYS GORILLA SAFARI RWANDA

DAY 1

After breakfast you will be picked up by the tour guide from your hotel for a drive to Akagera National Park. While driving northwards to the Tanzania border you will enjoy the beautiful views of the country side. In the afternoon you will arrive at the gate of the park where you will have a lunch. Hereafter you will have an evening game drive where it is possible to spot the first animals of the big 5! The day will end with dinner and overnight at Akagera safari lodge.

DAY 2

Today we will wake up early in the morning and head out for an early game drive. This drive will take you up to the northern part of the park to catch a glimpse of the early risers and predators. During the morning it is likely to see these animals in action before they will take a rest in the shade. Here, you will enjoy a variety of e.g. impalas, lions and zebras.

In the afternoon you will have lunch during a boat cruise on Lake Ihema. Here you will explore the wildlife from another perspective. The lake is famous for its crocodiles, hippo’s and over 525 bird species! Also keep your eyes open along the river line, because wildlife animals will come here to drink and wash themselves. Hereafter you will return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

DAY 3

This is your last day at Akagera National Park and we will wake up early to set off to for Nyungwe Forest National Park. After breakfast we’ll driving south through Kigali city to Gisenyi province. In Kigali you will have a city tour. This tour will include the Gisozi genocide memorial site, the national museum, the Kandt House, several craft shops and local markets. Hereafter you will have a lunch in Butare. After the lunch we will proceed our drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park where we arrive in the evening.

DAY 4

After breakfast we’re heading towards the Nyungew Forest Park. Here you will first receive a short briefing about the do’s and don’ts of chimp trekking. Afterwards you’re ready for your search to the chimpanzees. During this search you should keep your eyes open to spot one of the many monkey species in this forest. When you found the chimps you can interact with them and take as many pictures as possible. Following you will have lunch and go for a walk.

DAY 5

Today we’re heading towards the Gisenyi province – the home to Lake Kivu. During this drive you enjoy the amazing views of the country side: rolling hills and thick vegetation. You will have a stopover to visit the Murambi Genocide memorial site and Nyanza King’s palace.

DAY 6

Today we’re visiting the coffee island: Nyamirundi Island. After breakfast we’ll take the boat to the island where you get a tour. This tour starts from coffee plantations, goes further to harvesting, sorting, processing and eventually packaging. After this tour you enjoy your lunch at Lake Kivu where you can relax and enjoy the amazing view.

DAY 7

After breakfast we’re heading to Volcanoes National Park in the Musanze province. You enjoy the most amazing panoramic views and eventually reach the park in the evening. Here you have the option to go for a walk towards nearby communities.

DAY 8

Today you will stand face to face with the gorillas! After breakfast we will go to the Kinigi Park by 7:00 am. Here you will have registration and explanation about the do’s and don’ts within the park. With your tracking gear on you go into the thick dense montane and bamboo trees filled park. This search may lasts between 30 minutes to several hours depending on how deep your gorilla family has moved in to the forest in search of water and food. Once you find the gorillas, you can interact an hour with them; as they eat, play and tease each other while taking photographs and videos. After you took as much as possible photographs, it’s time to retrieve to your starting point.

In the afternoon we head out for a visit to Ib’ywacu Cultural Village where you will engage into the Rwanda traditional cultural activities. This ranges from dancing, singing, poetry and storytelling to dressing up like the Rwandese royals, knitting baskets and mats and  preparing their traditional meals.

DAY 9

Today you’re heading out for the golden monkeys! Like mountain gorillas, golden monkeys are best tracked in the morning. So we wake up early, enjoy breakfast and reach the Kingi park by 7:00 am. After a short briefing you’ll be ready for your trekking. Besides visiting the golden monkeys, you go to the Karisoke research center for the remains of Dian Fossey. She was an American scientist who dedicated her life to saving and conserving the mountain gorillas. During the hike you have to keep your eyes open for other wildlife species like wild elephants, colorful butterflies and birds. Afterwards you have return to your hotel to have lunch, freshen up and relax for a while. In the afternoon we’re heading out for a walk to lakes Burera and Ruhondo.

DAY 10

Today is your last day! After breakfast you drive back to Kigali for either a drop off at the airport or your hotel.
